Paulding FFA Officer Team Holds Retreat! 2020-2021 Paulding FFA Officer Team Retreat

The Paulding FFA officer team traveled to Hocking Hills Ohio on July 29th - 31st for their annual
FFA officer retreat. The purpose of this trip was for the officers to get to know each other better
through team building activities and bonding. There were two advisors and eleven officers and
one parent chaperone on the trip.

The officer team truly benefitted from this time spent together, because it helped us get
to know each other more and set goals for our chapter. It will help us work together in the
upcoming year. Thanks to the Paulding FFA Alumni for their support of this trip. It was a great
experience for our team!!

During COVID-19 Paulding FFA Members are “Living to Serve”

Since school has not been in session since mid- March that hasn’t stopped the Paulding FFA Chapter from helping to serve our members and help our community by focusing on the FFA Motto: Learning to Do, Do to Learn, Earning to Live and Living to Serve.  Our members decided to start the hygiene closet in March when school was shutdown. Through collaboration with the Paulding staff and administration, the Paulding FFA started its hygiene bags to help the many families in Paulding struggling due to COVID-19. Each week at Paulding and Oakwood a five day supply of meals is handed out to children age 1-18. In conjunction with the meals, the Panther’s care closet established by the Paulding FFA is having the Paulding Staff hand out hygiene kits to families who would like to receive them.

Living to ServePictured here are various Paulding staff members who are helping to sort the hygiene items to be disbursed. Everyone is helping to provide all we can for our students!

FFA Week

Last week, the Paulding FFA celebrated FFA week by having many events around the school. During this week, every day was a dress-up day. The Paulding FFA hosted their annual Country Olympics with the entire high school in attendance. The students competed in a wide variety of games and competitions with their house in order to be crowned the winning house. These games consisted of straw stacking, stick horse races, tug of war, cattle roping, musical chairs, and a milking contest. Finally, each house made their own line dance to perform at the end of all the other contests.

The house, Stupendum, ended up as the winner of the competition. Overall the students had a very fun day at the country Olympics and are very excited for next year!

During FFA week and the week before, students and staff brought in supplies for the Paulding FFA’s hygiene closet. This hygiene closet will be for elementary, middle and high school students who are not able to afford their own hygiene items, so will be able to get them from the hygiene closet whenever they are needed. The hygiene drive during the last two weeks provided a good jump start for the project, with students and staff donating more than 1,600 items total.

FFA Feeding Farmers Program

Throughout the month of October and the first half of November, the Paulding FFA chapter has
been feeding the farmers around Paulding county. The chapter first started doing this last year
and found that it was a good way to support local farmers and thank them for their countless
hours of work to feed our world. The students prepared meals in brown bags to give to the
farmers while they are working in the field and may not have time to run home to eat. These bags
contain items such as cookies, chips, applesauce, a water bottle, and pop. A note written by
students in the chapter was also included in the bag, thanking farmers for all they do. The FFA
members delivered over one hundred meals to farmers in Paulding County. Feeding our farmers
is one way we try and thank our farmers for feeding all of America. The Paulding FFA is very
excited to continue this project in the upcoming years and hopes that it can become bigger and
better each year!

Mr Gilbert's Microbiology Class 2020

The Microbiology class had a busy start to the new year.  In our first week, we mixed and autoclaved nutrient agar solution, which was then poured into twenty plates and three test tubes.

We then carried out a hand washing exercise.  Students ran their fingers over various items in the classroom (top of the TV, sink handles, door handles, chewed gum, computer keyboard, and light switch), then pressed each of their fingers onto an agar plate into the positions marked 1-4.  They then ran their fingers over the same area and washed each of their fingers in four different cleansers: Anti-bacterial soap, Hand sanitizer, Hibiclens and Povidone-Iodine.  Fingers were once again pressed onto agar on the side opposite the original.  Plates were incubated and examined for growth.  All four cleansers did an outstanding job of cleaning, as only two colonies showed up in the 24 areas where fingers were pressed.

We then did some streak plates using sterile cotton swabs taking samples from our nostrils and mouth.  You can see the growth in the pictures.

Please check out all of the pictures in the gallery link HERE

Grant for Paulding 1 st Grade Agriculture Adventures Program

The Paulding Agriculture Education program receives a grant from the Paulding Area
Foundation for their new 1 st Grade Agriculture Adventures Program. High School students in the
livestock class are partnering with the 1 st grade students at Paulding Elementary to teach the
youth about livestock. This new program is called Ag Adventures and will focus on teaching the
students about livestock raised in Paulding County. This program will begin by talking to 1 st
graders about swine. The high school students would go down to the 1st-grade classrooms and
do a presentation, a fun activity and read the students a book about swine. This will allow our
high school students to interact with younger students and share their knowledge learned in
the classroom with them through hands-on activities. This program will align with the 1st-grade
science standards that focus on mammals, animal needs and their habitats. After the fun
activities and reading each 1st-grade student would receive their very own copy of the book to
take home and share their livestock knowledge with their families. The goal of this project is for
the elementary students to learn more about Paulding County’s agriculture and livestock industry
while enhancing their literacy through the gift of a book. Paulding Ag department is very
excited about this program and appreciate the support of the Paulding Area Foundation to help
our student advocate for agriculture and teach younger generations about the importance of

A Medieval Dinner

Mrs. Perry’s Advanced Senior English class participated in a Medieval Dinner Monday, Nov. 4th. After students read The Canterbury Tales, which is about a medieval road trip that consisted of a variety of people from that time period, they researched different foods from the medieval times and brought dishes in to share with the class. Some dishes brought in were Medieval Fine Cakes, Almond Milk Rice, Strawberries in Snow, Strawberry Tarts, Pumpes (Meatballs), and Emplumeus (bakes apples). The students also had to choose a modern person to bring on the road trip, and write a poem him/her in iambic pentameter with rhyming couplets like Geoffrey Chaucer did for The Canterbury Tales. The trip consisted of sports heroes like LeBron James, Aaron Rodgers, and Baker Mayfield to politicians like Donald Trump and Barrack Obama.

PHS Community Service Day at Black Swamp Nature Center

Paulding High School and Paulding Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) once again collaborated to hold a Community Service Workday at the Black Swamp Nature Center. Over 350 students in grades 9-12 from Paulding High School and their teachers braved the cool fall weather to make a big difference in their local community. This is the second community service day that has been done by the students.

No task was too big or small for the students as they completed many projects that they and their fellow community members can enjoy for many years to come. One of the most notable projects is the installation of a three-hole disc golf course throughout the grounds of the Black Swamp Nature Center. Students helped to prep everything for the installation of the disc golf holes from prepping holes for the bases to painting signs to mark the holes. This project was funded thanks to donations to the Friends of the Black Swamp Nature Center through the Paulding County Area Foundation.
