November 7th, 2019, 4 Paulding FFA members attended the district food science contest. There were schools 10 that attended the district contest this year. Team members included Shannon Hale, Paige Jones, Jonathon Reinhard, and Sydney Reineck. The contest consists of a team and individual part. As a team, the members had to complete a product development scenario. This consists of designing the packaging, creating the nutrition label, and finding all of the nutrition information for the given product. The individual part of the contest consists of identifying aromas, identifying food processing equipment, and responding to customer inquiries. They also must be able to identify safety hazards around food and complete a math portion about the calories in food. Individually Jonathan Reinhard placed 1st in the district and Paige Jones placed 2nd. As a team, they placed 1st out of 10 schools. The team will advance to the state competition on December 7th in Columbus!

FFA National Convention

The Paulding FFA chapter sent 12 students and 2 advisors to the 92nd annual FFA National Convention. On October 30th, the students started off their day by attending the FFA expo center. The expo center provides students with an opportunity to learn about new businesses and
the newest farming technologies. Then students attended the opening session to the convention. During this opening session, students learned about the many different opportunities that FFA has to offer and heard from guest speaker, Bob Goff. Saturday morning, students attended the
American Degree ceremony where three of our chapter’s members received their degrees. Only 1% of all FFA members earn their American degree, the highest degree a member can earn, due to the many requirements that the member must meet.  Congratulations to the following members on earning their degrees: Paige Fitzwater, Austin Howell, and Abbie McMichael. The members had a very busy and fun week and
are excited for next year’s convention! All of the members would also like to thank the Paulding FFA Alumni for all of their support on this trip.

OMUN Competes in Columbus

Mrs. Harder's Ohio Model United Nations students attended Ohio Leadership Institute's annual Model United Nations competition in Columbus on December 7th, 8th and 9th.  This year's students represented our school and community very well.  The goal at this competition is to have a resolution heard in one of the three General Assemblies (GA, GA:Human Rights, GA World Court) on the second day of competition.  This year we had five nations represented and of these, the nation of Kyrgyzstan made it to GA: Human Rights and the nation of Zimbabwe was recommended to be heard in GA.  We also had an individual award winner, Hannah Farr, who received an Outstanding Leadership Award.  Great job to all who participated!

Students and staff promoted thier favorite college, university or military branch, by making banners, wearing clothing to advertise their favorite, and decoring hallways.  Below are the door prize winners event.

Ohio youth capital challenge

The Paulding FFA would like to congratulate Carter Manz on being selected to represent the Paulding FFA at the Ohio Youth Capital Challenge in March. Carter was 1 of only 40 members from 4-H, FFA and Farm Bureau selected for this conference across the State of Ohio. The Ohio Youth Capital Challenge is the culmination of an interactive civic education program designed to actively engage youth in the civic life of their communities. In the OYCC, the group will be identifying and analyzing issues and problems facing their community (school, neighborhood, town/city, state).

FFA Feeding Farmers Program

Throughout the month of October and the first half of November, the Paulding FFA chapter has
been feeding the farmers around Paulding county. The chapter first started doing this last year
and found that it was a good way to support local farmers and thank them for their countless
hours of work to feed our world. The students prepared meals in brown bags to give to the
farmers while they are working in the field and may not have time to run home to eat. These bags
contain items such as cookies, chips, applesauce, a water bottle, and pop. A note written by
students in the chapter was also included in the bag, thanking farmers for all they do. The FFA
members delivered over one hundred meals to farmers in Paulding County. Feeding our farmers
is one way we try and thank our farmers for feeding all of America. The Paulding FFA is very
excited to continue this project in the upcoming years and hopes that it can become bigger and
better each year!

Mr Gilbert's Microbiology Class 2020

The Microbiology class had a busy start to the new year.  In our first week, we mixed and autoclaved nutrient agar solution, which was then poured into twenty plates and three test tubes.

We then carried out a hand washing exercise.  Students ran their fingers over various items in the classroom (top of the TV, sink handles, door handles, chewed gum, computer keyboard, and light switch), then pressed each of their fingers onto an agar plate into the positions marked 1-4.  They then ran their fingers over the same area and washed each of their fingers in four different cleansers: Anti-bacterial soap, Hand sanitizer, Hibiclens and Povidone-Iodine.  Fingers were once again pressed onto agar on the side opposite the original.  Plates were incubated and examined for growth.  All four cleansers did an outstanding job of cleaning, as only two colonies showed up in the 24 areas where fingers were pressed.

We then did some streak plates using sterile cotton swabs taking samples from our nostrils and mouth.  You can see the growth in the pictures.

Please check out all of the pictures in the gallery link HERE

Grant for Paulding 1 st Grade Agriculture Adventures Program

The Paulding Agriculture Education program receives a grant from the Paulding Area
Foundation for their new 1 st Grade Agriculture Adventures Program. High School students in the
livestock class are partnering with the 1 st grade students at Paulding Elementary to teach the
youth about livestock. This new program is called Ag Adventures and will focus on teaching the
students about livestock raised in Paulding County. This program will begin by talking to 1 st
graders about swine. The high school students would go down to the 1st-grade classrooms and
do a presentation, a fun activity and read the students a book about swine. This will allow our
high school students to interact with younger students and share their knowledge learned in
the classroom with them through hands-on activities. This program will align with the 1st-grade
science standards that focus on mammals, animal needs and their habitats. After the fun
activities and reading each 1st-grade student would receive their very own copy of the book to
take home and share their livestock knowledge with their families. The goal of this project is for
the elementary students to learn more about Paulding County’s agriculture and livestock industry
while enhancing their literacy through the gift of a book. Paulding Ag department is very
excited about this program and appreciate the support of the Paulding Area Foundation to help
our student advocate for agriculture and teach younger generations about the importance of

Paulding FFA Member Establishes Warming Hearts and Warming Hand Campaign

A Medieval Dinner

Mrs. Perry’s Advanced Senior English class participated in a Medieval Dinner Monday, Nov. 4th. After students read The Canterbury Tales, which is about a medieval road trip that consisted of a variety of people from that time period, they researched different foods from the medieval times and brought dishes in to share with the class. Some dishes brought in were Medieval Fine Cakes, Almond Milk Rice, Strawberries in Snow, Strawberry Tarts, Pumpes (Meatballs), and Emplumeus (bakes apples). The students also had to choose a modern person to bring on the road trip, and write a poem him/her in iambic pentameter with rhyming couplets like Geoffrey Chaucer did for The Canterbury Tales. The trip consisted of sports heroes like LeBron James, Aaron Rodgers, and Baker Mayfield to politicians like Donald Trump and Barrack Obama.

PHS Community Service Day at Black Swamp Nature Center

Paulding High School and Paulding Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) once again collaborated to hold a Community Service Workday at the Black Swamp Nature Center. Over 350 students in grades 9-12 from Paulding High School and their teachers braved the cool fall weather to make a big difference in their local community. This is the second community service day that has been done by the students.

No task was too big or small for the students as they completed many projects that they and their fellow community members can enjoy for many years to come. One of the most notable projects is the installation of a three-hole disc golf course throughout the grounds of the Black Swamp Nature Center. Students helped to prep everything for the installation of the disc golf holes from prepping holes for the bases to painting signs to mark the holes. This project was funded thanks to donations to the Friends of the Black Swamp Nature Center through the Paulding County Area Foundation.

Please see the full gallery of pictures here.
